How You Can Repair An A/C System That Isn't Cooling

Your air conditioner provides you with a lot of comfort throughout the summer months. You may run this appliance for nearly six months out of the year depending on the weather, and throughout this entire time, you demand that it run to cool your home and your family. When this system stops working, it is noticeable. You are no longer comfortable in your own home and sitting in your own sweat, or avoiding being home so you don't have to sweat at home is going to get old. Test Your Thermostat

Your thermostat may not be working as it should and may not be sending the right signal to your system in order for it to run properly. You can test your thermostat by changing the temperature to see if it sends a signal to your system. If you don't hear the air conditioner turning on, you should try activating the "fan only" setting to see if this work. If the fan turns on, the thermostat may not necessarily be the problem. If it was the thermostat, you need to replace your thermostat.

Check Your Condensing Unit

Go outside of your home and inspect your condensing unit to see if it is still in good shape. If your condensing unit is damaged, has rusted through, has items stacked all over it, or has items blocking the flow of air, it is going to need some attention. You need to keep several feet of clearance all the way around the unit to allow for free airflow. You also need to keep belongings off of the condensing unit, so clear away clutter. If the unit was damaged, it may need to be replaced. You can hire a professional repairman to look at your unit to see if it needs to be replaced.

Test For Refrigerant

If your air conditioner is not cooling, but the fan runs, it may be out of refrigerant. This is not something you can replace on your own, and only someone that specializes in refrigerant can handle this task. Hire a professional repairman to fix your system and test for other issues or concerns.
